Cause list, Live Courts and Sitting Roster, the complete guide

What the Daily Cause List, Live Courts and Sitting Roster pages show, how fresh they are, how to use them for a day's work, and what they leave out on purpose.

Three pages in the web sidebar help you plan a day at the Supreme Court: Daily Cause List, Live Courts and Sitting Roster. This guide explains what each one shows, how fresh the information is, and how to use them together. It also says what they deliberately do not show.

These pages are built on the Court's public information. They are a convenience, not the official record, and not legal advice. Always confirm against the Supreme Court website before you rely on an entry. If you are new to cause lists, start with how to read the cause list.

Daily Cause List

Open Daily Cause List in the web sidebar. A Court selector sits at the top (courts without data are listed as "coming soon" and cannot be chosen), and Refresh reloads the cause lists, your clash check and the live board together. There are three tabs.

Live Display Board (the default tab)

Titled "Supreme Court of India: Real-Time Session Status" and marked LIVE TODAY, this tab shows the Court's display board for courts 1 to 17, with a count of active courts.

  • A grid of courtrooms or a classic table ("Grid Visualizer View", "Classic Board Table View").
  • A search box and status filters such as All Courts, In Session, Lunch and Passover, each with a count.
  • The current item in each court, the bench, and how far through the day's list the court is.
  • Click a court to jump to its full day list.
  • A note on the Court's virtual hearing rooms. Check the Court's own notices for the current protocol.
  • Proximity alerts. A radar that says it alerts you when a matter you watch is 3 to 5 items away. You can switch a chime on or off, press Enable Alerts to allow browser notifications, and remove matters from its dock.

With no live data it says "No Live Board Data Available" and that live session data is published on working days between 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM IST.

My Cases Hearing & Clash Radar

This tab shows your hearings for one day and warns when two are likely to be called close together. Choose a Hearing Date from the dates with a published list. Three figures summarise the day: Listed Cases Today, Courtrooms Involved and Hearing Conflicts / Clashes. Each clash is a Courtroom Clash Alert card with the two matters, their estimated call windows, the gap in minutes and an advisory note. Your scheduled matters follow, each with an Est. Call range.

By default the radar uses the cases you track. If you add a diary or case number in its box, it checks those numbers instead. That list lives on the page only and is not saved to your account. To keep a case, add it from Add a Case (see track a case with LawyerInsight). On My Cases, a banner can also warn you of clashes, with a View Clash Radar button that brings you here.

Courtroom Cause Lists

This tab is the cause list itself.

  • Search by case title, case number or diary number. Stage buttons narrow by type of matter.
  • Courtroom tabs show All Courtrooms or one court, with its count of matters.
  • For one court, the Coram & Bench Allocation header shows the bench and the number of matters, with a link to the court's virtual room.
  • Each row shows the item number, matter type, an estimated call time range, the case title and the case number (or diary number). Sub-items are marked Connected Matter.
  • When the court is sitting, a row can read Running in Court Now, Heard / Concluded, or Next Up when the item is up to three matters away.
  • Check Clashes adds a matter to the clash radar for this visit and then reads Tracked. This is not tracking in My Cases.

Call times are estimates. A matter can be called earlier or later, and the Court's own list always prevails.

Live Courts

Live Courts is a simpler page that shows one card per courtroom.

Each card shows:

  • The court number and its status: In session, Not in session, Lunch break, Adjourned or Passover.
  • The current item, for example "Item 12", with the case number and title when the board gives them.
  • The bench, and any message the board shows.
  • "Updated" with the time of the last reading, in India time.
  • If you are signed in and one of your tracked matters is listed in that court today, the card is highlighted and says where you stand, such as "Your item 12, 4 away" or "Your item 12 is being heard now". If your item has passed, it says so and adds that it may be called later.

Outside sitting hours the page says "Courts are not in session" and "The live board fills in during sitting hours."

How fresh is the information?

The pages never read the Court's board directly in your browser. They read LawyerInsight's stored copy of it. Each page shows its own freshness cue.

WhereHow often your browser asks againWhat tells you it is old
Live CourtsEvery minute while the tab is visibleAfter 5 minutes the page says "Live data is N minutes old and may be out of date." Each card shows its "Updated" time.
Live Display Board tabEvery 20 secondsA small label on a court reads "Updated N min ago" or "Not live" when the data is more than about 2 minutes old or the court was never read. The tab also shows a "Refreshed" time from your own device.
My Day (web)Every minute for todayLive strips show for today only.
Cause lists and the rosterWhen you open the page, change the court or date, or press RefreshThere is no refreshed-at time on the roster page.

A footnote on Live Courts says positions are read from the Supreme Court display board and may lag the courtroom. Treat the live pages as a guide to where a court is, not as the Court's word on when your matter will be called.

The Sitting Roster

Sitting Roster is about who sits, not about how they decide. It has a Court Jurisdiction selector. Some features exist only for the Supreme Court, and the page opens on the judges directory.

Summary cards

Four cards sit at the top: Sanctioned Strength, Working Strength (sitting judges), Active Vacancies with the vacancy percentage, and, for the Supreme Court, the Line of Succession (for other courts, the retirement age).

The tabs

  • Sitting & Former Judges has four sub-views: Sitting Judges, Tenure Timeline, Supreme Court Collegium and Former Judges Directory. The sitting table shows seniority, name, birth date, date of appointment, parent High Court or Bar, retirement date and a Career drawer. You can sort and filter, and search by judge or parent High Court. The former judges view has a Former CJIs Only box. Names link to each judge's profile.
  • Line of Succession to CJI is a timeline of who becomes Chief Justice and when.
  • Courtroom Benches shows each sitting bench, with the courtroom, bench type, presiding judge, companion judges, seniority rank and the Allocated Matters for that bench, plus a link to the court's virtual room where one exists.
  • Retirements Radar lists retirements in the next 36 months, with the number of days left, and a short note on the constitutional rules on tenure.

The bench finder

On Courtroom Benches, pick a subject pill such as "Criminal & Bail" or type a keyword or judge name. The page highlights the bench whose allocated subjects, courtroom or judge name matches best. This is a keyword match against the roster's stated subject allocation. It does not predict how a matter will be decided, and it can only be as good as the roster data. If nothing matches, it still shows a bench, so always check the Court's own roster and notices.

Using them together for a day's work

  1. The evening before: open My Day and press Tomorrow. It groups your tracked matters by court with estimated call times and clash warnings.
  2. In the morning: open the Daily Cause List. Check Courtroom Cause Lists for your court and read the bench in the Coram & Bench Allocation header. Use the Hearing & Clash Radar if you have more than one matter.
  3. If you are unsure which court hears a subject: use the bench finder on the Sitting Roster, then confirm on the Court's list.
  4. During the day: keep Live Courts or the Live Display Board open. Look for your highlighted court and the "items away" count. Allow browser alerts if you want the radar's sound and pop-ups.
  5. If your item is passed: the pages say it may still be called later. Stay reachable.
  6. After the hearing: the order appears on your tracked case once the Court uploads it. See alerts for your tracked cases and search cases and orders.

What the mobile app offers

The mobile app has no separate cause list, Live Courts or Sitting Roster screen. What it has is inside My Day, which is Today and Tomorrow for your own tracked matters, grouped by court with the bench, item numbers, estimated call times and clash badges.

  • For today, each court can show a live line such as "Now at item 9" with how many items come before yours, "Updated" with a time, and "Live data delayed" when the reading is more than five minutes old. It is labelled "Live from the SCI display board; may be delayed." The live line appears only when the live tracker is switched on for the app, so you may not see it.
  • When the live tracker is on and My Day is open, a banner tells you when one of your matters is within your chosen number of items. Alerts while the app is closed come from push notifications instead, which you set in alert settings.
  • If nothing of yours is listed, the screen offers Cause list, which opens the website's cause list.
  • The Android home-screen widget shows your next listing.

For the full cause list, live board and roster, use the website.

What these pages do not show

  • No outcome, relief or adjournment rates for a named judge or bench. None of these pages ranks, scores or rates a judge, and LawyerInsight does not predict how a particular judge will decide. Outcome statistics elsewhere in the product are court-wide, by bench size or by cohort, each with a definition on the methodology page. See court-wide insights.
  • No ranking of advocates. The pages list matters and benches, not who is better.
  • No confirmed call times. Estimated times are labelled as estimates.
  • No official status. For what the Court has actually listed, use the Court's website.

Common questions

Why does Live Courts say the courts are not in session? The board fills in during sitting hours. Outside them, or on a holiday, every court shows as not in session.

Why does a court say "Updated 6 min ago" or "Not live"? The stored reading is old or was never taken. Do not rely on that court's position.

My item is marked passed. Is it over? Not necessarily. The pages say it "may be called later".

Does "Tracked" on the cause list add the case to My Cases? No. Use Add a Case.

Can I see how often a judge allows or dismisses matters? No. Those numbers are not shown for a named judge or bench.

Does the roster show a last updated time? No. Check the Court's notices for recent changes.
